About the Bosnian language:

The Bosnian language is spoken by over 2.5 million people, mostly by Bosniaks living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in surrounding countries. Bosnian is one of three official languages in Bosnia, alongside Serbian and Croatian. The Bosnian language is a standardized version of Serbo-Croatian, which was considered one language prior to the breakup of Yugoslavia. However regional dialects existed, which largely accounts for the present differences between Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. Nevertheless, these languages are mutually intelligible. Bosnian is written using both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.

Bosnian is very similar to Serbian, Croatian and Montenegrin languages, and their division into separate languages is due more to political rather than linguistic divisions. These languages have previously been referred to as Serbo-Croatian. You can read about the history and politics of these languages in the Economist's article 'Is Serbo-Croatian a language?'.
