About the Dutch language

The Dutch language is a West Germanic language spoken by approximately 29 million speakers, of whom 24 million are native speakers. After English and German, Dutch is the most spoken Germanic language. Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands and Suriname, and one of three official languages of Belgium, where the group of dialects spoken are collectively called Flemish. Dutch is also spoken in the Netherlands Antilles, the group of former Dutch Caribbean islands colonies alongside English and a creole language called Papiamento. The Afrikaans language spoken in South Africa evolved from the Dutch spoken by Dutch colonists, and Afrikaans and Dutch are mutually intelligible.
