Finno-Ugric and Uralic languages

Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language, a subfamily of the Uralic language family. There are around 25 million speakers of Uralic languages, spread across northern Russia, Scandanavia and the Hungarian speaking regions of Central Europe. The most spoken of the Finno-Ugric languages are Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian. Finnish is a Baltic Finnic language and has similarities with Estonian and especially Karelian. Several Finno-Ugric languages have few speakers and are endangered. Finnish people did not originate from the same region as their language. Uralic language comes from the Ural mountain region of central Russia, while the Finnish people came from what is now Turkey.

Countries where Finnish is spoken

Finnish is spoken by over 5 million people in Finland as a first language. A further 500,000 people in native Swedish speaking Finns speak Finnish as a second language. Finnish is a minority language in Sweden, with over 200,000 speakers. There are also small Finnish speaking minorities in Norway and Russia.

Learning the Finnish language

Finnish can be difficult for European language speakers to learn because the Finnish language is quite different from other major European languages. Notably, Finnish does not use articles, prepositions or gender pronouns.
