About the Maltese language:

Around 520,000 people speak Maltese, most of whom live on the island of Malta, where Maltese is one of the two national languages. Maltese is a Semitic language that developed out of Arabic. Following the Norman conquests in the 11th century, Christian rulers came to control Malta, and the Maltese language went through a process of Latinization. Maltese is the only language with Arabic roots to use the Latin alphabet rather than the Arabic script in writing, and around half of Maltese vocabulary comes from Italian and Sicilian.
