Ceremonial/geographic counties of England

Ceremonial counties are land areas of England to which lords-lieutenant (royal representatives) are appointed. Almost all ceremonial counties were local authority areas from 1889 to 1974. These counties are also referred to as geographic counties, and these counties are still used for statistical purposes. For the purposes of governance and administration since 1974, England is divided into 82 metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties.
