The Netherlands is a small but densely populated country in Western Europe situated between Germany to the East and Belgium to the South. Almost half of the Netherlands is below sea level, protected from river flooding by 2,400 kms of dikes, and from coastal erosion by sea walls. The name Netherlands means the 'low countries' as most of the country consists of coastal plains. There are some hilly areas to the south. The Netherlands is one of the World's most densely populated countries.
