Note that the population of a city may be measured by the number of people living within the main city area, or the population of the wider metropolitan area. The metropolitan area includes joining and surrounding urban and industrial centers. The metropolitan area is usually a considerably larger area and has a greater population. For example, the city (and county) of San Francisco has a population of 231,000, but is part of the wider San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland area. The San Francisco metropolitan area has a population of over 4 million people.

New York is the most populous city in the United States, followed by Los Angeles and then Chicago. New York is the second-largest city in North America, after Mexico city.
