French grammar notes:

When the colour is used as a noun, the gender of the word is masculine. As adjectives, the gender of some colour words change depending on the subject. Below are common colours in the feminine form (when adjectives):

  • blue - bleue (e.g. la robe bleue - the blue dress)
  • green - verte
  • white - blanche
  • black noire

Dark in French is foncé, and light is 'clair'. For 'dark blue' you would say 'bleu foncé', 'light green' is 'vert clair'.
