About the Karelian language

Livvi-Karelian language is a dialect of the Karelian language, a Finnic language closely related to Finnish. Karelian is very similar to the dialect of Finnish spoken in eastern Finland, and some linguists consider Karelian to be a dialect of Finnish rather than a separate language. Karelian is mainly spoken in the Russian Republic of Karelia. Livvi Karelian is spoken by the ‘Olonets Karelians’ in the southern part of Karelia, in the area between the Ladoga and Onega lakes. There are around 100,000 Karelian speakers, while around 31,000 of these are Livvi-Karelian speakers.

For more information on the Karelian language see the Wikipedia article on Karelian language and Omniglot Karelian.
